What are FMSCA Inspections?
Federal DOT inspections, or FMCSA inspections, are an essential aspect of commercial trucking to ensure safe operations on the road. Inspections are conducted on a yearly basis by authorized inspectors like FMSCA agents and cover a wide range of areas, including brakes, lighting, tires, and more.
During the inspection, the inspector may conduct a level 1 inspection, which includes a comprehensive examination covering all areas of the vehicle and driver documentation. Alternatively, they may conduct level 2 through 6 inspections, which are less comprehensive and focus on specific areas. Regardless of the level, inspections are crucial to ensure your truck complies with federal regulations and is safe to drive. Non-compliant trucks may be fined or placed out of service until the necessary repairs are made.
At EIP Diesel Repair, our experienced technicians possess the know-how and experience to conduct comprehensive inspections, including level 1 inspections, to ensure your commercial truck won't fail an FMSCA inspection. Contact us today to schedule an FMCSA inspection and ensure the safety of your commercial truck.
California’s DOT Inspections Explained
As a truck owner or operator, you can’t forget California’s regular DOT inspections. If you operate a truck with a GVW rating of 10,000 lbs. or more in California, you need to have your truck inspected every 90 days as part of the Basic Inspection of Terminals program (BIT), previously known as the Biennial Inspection of Terminals. These inspections help make sure your commercial vehicle meets safety regulations and operates safely on the road.
The California Highway Patrol conducts these inspections to audit your records of inspections done by a certified mechanic (like us!). It is also required to maintain a scheduled preventive maintenance program to prevent collisions and mechanical breakdowns.
A quick note: annual DOT inspections, which are federally mandated, are not the same as BIT inspections. While certain states may require only the annual DOT inspection, California requires the BIT inspection every 90 days for commercial vehicles over 10,000 GVW. By demonstrating good safety behavior and maintenance practices, motor carriers can benefit from less frequent inspections under the BIT program.
