EGRs Explained
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems work by recirculating a portion of the engine's exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber, decreasing the amount of oxygen available for combustion and lowering peak combustion temperatures. This process is an essential step in reducing truckers’ carbon footprint as it reduces the production of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx).
The EGR system is comprised of several components, including the EGR valve, EGR cooler, and EGR control solenoid, which work together to manage the recirculation of exhaust gases. Issues with the EGR system can cause problems such as the "check engine" light, reduced fuel efficiency, decreased engine performance, and rough idling.
DPFs Explained
Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are designed to capture and trap soot and other harmful emissions, preventing them from being released into the environment. When the filter becomes full, the engine management system initiates a regeneration process to burn off the trapped particles and keep the filter working effectively. This process can either be passive or active. Passive regeneration occurs when heat from the exhaust system triggers the regeneration process, while active regeneration involves injecting additional fuel into the engine to raise the exhaust temperature.
